Guide to Preparing for your Move

We at American Van & Storage Corp. want to make sure your move is handled as efficiently as possible.  With your help in preparing for your move, we can accomplish this.  The following list details what needs to be done before the day of the move:

  •  Check your homeowner’s policy to see if moving/storage are covered.  Be sure your new home is covered by transferring fire, theft and other personal property insurance.

  • Plan to use up most food items before the move.  Give away extra food to a shelter or a neighbor.

  • Defrost, clean and dry your refrigerator before moving day.  If your refrigerator has an icemaker, please have this line disconnected.  If you will need assistance in doing so, call your coordinator and they will set up a third party to service the icemaker.

  • Disconnect other appliances that you are moving, i.e. washer & dryer.

  • All waterbeds must be fully drained and disassembled before moving day.

  • Pool tables must be disassembled and the slate properly prepared for shipment, we suggest you call your local gaming store for assistance, or call your coordinator for a third party to service your pool table.

  •  Grandfather clocks must have the weights and pendulum removed.

  • You can leave clothes and linens in your bureau drawers.  However, do not leave books and other loose items in any drawers, pack them in boxes.  Remove any loose and valuable items.

  • If you are packing yourself, all items must be in boxes and sealed.  Your driver will not accept items in plastic bags.  All of your packing must be done prior to your moving date, unless otherwise scheduled.

  • We advise you to make arrangements to transport your houseplants and firewood yourself.

  • You must remove any item nailed or screwed into the walls or floor.

  • You are responsible for any gas appliance, chandelier or ceiling fan that needs disconnecting.
